COMMUNITY INFORMATION

Downsview

Downsview is an area in the north end of Toronto, Ontario, Canada and also the name of a Toronto Transit Commission subway station in the area (see Downsview (TTC)). Downsview was originally a farm located in the 1870s near the present-day intersection of Keele Street and Wilson Avenue. It now extends beyond the intersection of Sheppard Avenue and Dufferin Street, in the former City of North York. The area includes several large post-WWII subdivisions. Within the area is Downsview Airport, the former site of Canadian Forces Base Downsview, which has since been largely converted following the end of the Cold War into an urban park known as Downsview Park. However, the airport is still used as a manufacturing and testing facility for Bombardier Aerospace.

History

The military base and DeHavilland Aircraft Co., including the runway and all buildings, was closed and sold to Bombardier Aerospace, a world renowned Canadian company in 1994. They have been manufacturing and testing commercial aircraft on-site since then.

Most of the houses were built following World War II and into the 1960s, though some new houses and condos are now being built near Downsview station. The subway ride is approximately 30 minutes south to downtown Toronto.

The east side of Dufferin Street is primarily residential, while the west side is industrial. This street has been relegated to a quiet service road in the adjacent neighbourhood of Bathurst Manor. Immediately beside Dufferin Street, a major Toronto artery, the William R. Allen Road, now brings large traffic volumes from Ontario Highway 401 (the busiest section of freeway in North America) just a minute south, as well as to downtown Toronto further south and rapidly-developing York Region to the north.

Downsview Park

Downsview Park is a former Canadian military base in Downsview, a neighbourhood in the north end of Toronto, Ontario.

Downsview Park has received the designation as a National Urban Park, and comprises a 2.4 km˛ (600 acres) property. Approximately 1.2 km˛ (300 acres) is designated for development into parkland, recreational, commercial, and cultural uses.

The property comprises the site of CFB Downsview, a Canadian Forces Base that closed in 1994. The Downsview Airport is located on the property and is still actively used by Bombardier Aerospace which maintains an aircraft manufacturing facility in the park.

Downsview Park is known for being one of the few National Urban Parks in Canada, and claims to be the first[1] along with the Plains of Abraham in Quebec City.[2]

Downsview Park is sporadically the host of big public events. On Sunday, July 28, 2002, over 800,000 Roman Catholics joined Pope John Paul II for a Papal Mass which was held there for World Youth Day. Also, on July 30, 2003, a massive concert called Sarsfest was held there to support the City of Toronto after SARS affected the city. Bands such as The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Rush and Justin Timberlake entertained half a million music fans from all over the world. It was reportedly the largest ticketed event in history.

The property has been the site of several high-profile events, including two Papal Visits by Pope John Paul II, in 1984 (while still an active military base) and 2002 (World Youth Day), as well as the Molson Canadian Rocks for Toronto concert in 2003 featuring The Rolling Stones.

Downsview and Wilson stations on the Yonge-University-Spadina subway line are both near Downsview Park on its eastern edge; the planned Sheppard West station would be located at the park's north end.

The Canadian Forces transferred control of the property to the Canada Lands Company in 1995. CLC created a subsidiary named Parc Downsview Park Inc. in 1998 to manage and implement the property's redevelopment.

SHOPPING

Downsview contains some of the best shopping in the Toronto area. The Yorkdale Shopping Centre is conveniently located at Dufferin and the 401 highway. This large indoor shopping mall attracts shoppers from all over Toronto to it's high profile retail stores. Yorkdale also contains movie theatres, a public library, professional offices, restaurants and a fitness facility.

North York Sheridan Mall at Jane Street and Wilson Avenue is a local indoor mall with a nice mix of big department stores and independent retailers. Further east the Downsview Plaza at Keele Street and Wilson Avenue features a large Italian supermarket, and professional and medical offices. The Lawrence Square shopping centre located at Lawrence Avenue West and the Allen Expressway includes big department stores, small retailers and professional and medical offices.

The Wilson Avenue and Bathurst Street shopping district includes Jewish gift shops, bakeries and restaurants.
